Inspection Station, Daggett, Cal - Rt. 66

They buried Grandpa Joad by the side of the road,
Grandma on the California side,
They buried Grandma on the California side.
— Woody Guthrie

Just a bit east of Daggett is an abandoned California Inspection Station. You can see it in the image above, off in the distance and on the left hand side of Route 66.

This is the third California Inspection Station built in Daggett. Its predecessor operated from 1930 until 1953 and was the one featured in the 1940 film version of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. This station shut down for good in 1967. But they forgot to tell the pigeons.

It was interesting to walk around this spot and wonder about the people, cars and trucks that drove through this checkpoint over the years. I wonder what the inspectors did with all the fruit and vegetables they confiscated? Did any make it home to their table ;-) I was lucky enough to find the entire area vacant of parked trucks or stored machinery, which made it easier to get some nice pictures of the structure. A nice lack of trash was also evident. Sharp-eyed viewers may have noticed the blue Tacoma and the red Tacoma, proof of different explorations. I’m currently on the grey Tacoma.
