When there are many motels to choose from, what might make someone pick one over another, especially after driving for hours late into the night? I think having a cool neon sign would definitely draw in business. “Look at the Burro, Dad! I want to stay there!” Maybe that’s why there were so many creative neon signs along the roads in the “olden days of yore.”

The Burro Jim Motel, along a long stretch of Hwy 60 out in the middle of almost-where Arizona, had an awesome sign. I’ve read that the neon ears waggled and the neon tail twitched. The motel reportedly opened around 1950 and had eleven rooms (cooled by Frigidaire Refrigeration). A pool and a cafe were also part of the Burro Jim Motel experience.

At some point, the sweet neon sign disappeared, hopefully to a good home.

I drove by in early 2022 and it looked like work was being done to refurbish the facility. Perhaps into apartments, but maybe a return to the motel biz. That would be cool. If anyone has any info on the plans for the property, would love to hear about it in the comment section below.
