Wells Fargo - Shingle Springs - California Gold Country

This photo was taken quite a few years ago, sometime prior to 1995, as that’s when it appeared in print in “The California Gold Country: Highway 49 Revisited.” Unfortunately, I believe it’s gone now, a victim of time and neglect. I was hoping the restoration effort would be successful, but apparently, sufficient funds weren’t raised.

Most references refer to it as the Wells Fargo Building. I’ve also seen it called a shingle mill, and have seen pictures of when it was a general store known as the “Phelps Store.” It was built of meta-andesite and semi-dressed granodiorite, both materials common in the immediate vicinity. It featured deep-set, arched doorways on both upper and lower stories. At one time an elaborate balcony stretched across the face of the building. Each year takes its toll on these old buildings throughout the gold country. Get out and see them while you can.
