Hi-Line Motel - Rt 66 - Arizona

This neat old motor court dates back to around 1936, when it was originally known as the Hi-Line Modern Auto Court. Laid out in a U shape, each room was separated by a garage so guests could pull their car in out of the elements. The office in the picture above originally served as a Shell Gas Station and had two pumps out in front. When the road was widened in the 1950s, there was no longer room for the pumps and they were removed. The station was then converted into the office and a residence. I wonder if the gas storage tanks are still underground.

This side of the “U” shows the garage areas between each room. The first one has been boarded up. I desperately wanted to walk onto the property and peek inside, but the no trespassing signs kept me on the sidewalk out front.

The other half of the “U” and some of the rooms in the rear. It’s sad to see such a neat place in this sad state, but I guess the costs involved to keep it up and restore it would be prohibitive. I wish I was rich, so many places that could be saved and put to use. Perhaps one of the rooms or the back of the office is still in use.

An old postcard showing the Shell Gas Station and the nifty sign above. Triple AAA approved!
